What is a Cookie?

Cookies are data, stored in small text files on your computer. The cookie allows the website to “remember” your actions or preferences over a period of time.
 
Cookies can be classified by their lifespan and the website to which it belongs. By lifespan a cookie is either a: 
  • Session cookie: cookie is deleted once the user closes their web browser.
  • Persistent cookie: the cookie lives for a specified period of time.
In terms of websites there are either:
  • First party: cookie belongs to the website you are browsing, for example, cookie used to identify you when you log in.
  • Third party: cookie belongs to a different website to the website you are visiting, for example, advertising tracking cookies.
